KIS Events
Throughout the year there are many chances for students to join fun events held at our school. We explore different cultures and curriculum unique from our regular lessons; for example, kids can decorate Easter eggs, learn how to make Japanese udon from scratch or march in our own Halloween parade! There’s always something to look forward to no matter what time of year it is.

Grand Championship 2019

Come on down! Tell us YOUR story!
The stage was set, and the announcement was made. The final of the Speech Grand Championship for 2018 was set to begin. I sat in my judge’s chair, excited in anticipation of what was to unfold. So many contestants, coming from such a wide age range, presenting an array of topics. As a judge, how were we to separate the great from the good, and the medalists from the outstanding?
So, just what made them worthy of their gold, silver or bronze? I must admit, the task wasn’t easy, but here is what it came down to. After a discussion with the panel of judges on stage, just prior to announcing the top 3, I discovered that all judges were looking for the same thing. It was a unanimous decision. Stage presence; the ability to connect with and capture the crowd. This was shown by our medalists. All three were great story tellers. They had a certain charisma, one that kept the audience wanting more.
Speech content, the ability to memorize, the usage of high-level vocabulary, and the skill to “recite” with great word enunciation, certainly gained valuable points. However, the contestants who delivered their message with feeling, were able to connect with the judges more.
Thank you to those who entered. Hold your head up high and be proud of what you had accomplished. Congratulations.
For those looking to enter this competition next year: Come on down! Tell us YOUR story!

Good morning/afternoon.
My name is _____________.
Today, I will be talking about volunteering.
Volunteering is when you give your time to help others.
In America, you can volunteer to help other people, animals, the environment, or even at big community events.
Volunteering is fun because you can learn a lot while helping the community.
I would like to volunteer to/at ____________________.
Thank you very much!
Mission ③
Volunteering is an individual or group voluntarily giving their time and labor to service their community for free.
Good morning/afternoon, my name is ___________________.
How can we volunteer?
Some examples of volunteering in America are helping to walk dogs at an animal shelter, preparing and serving food to those less fortunate, picking up litter around town, and planting flowers and vegetables at a community garden.
Some choose to volunteer in their home country, while others volunteer abroad. Many non-profit organizations rely on volunteers to accomplish their day-to-day objectives and achieve their long-term goals for charity.
Why do people volunteer?
Some say the key to a life of purpose is taking the time to help others every day.
Volunteering your time to help others connects you to a cause far greater than yourself – the goal of creating a better future for everyone.
I would like to volunteer to/at _________________, because _______________________.
What would you like to do to help others?
Whether you volunteer to help out at an animal shelter, clean up your local area, or take care of the people around you, it’s a win-win situation.

Udon is mostly made of flour. 80% of the wheat used to make the flour comes from other countries, like the US, Canada, and Australia.
Traditionally, Japanese wheat is best for udon. These days, half of Japanese wheat is grown in Hokkaido, but it’s hard, and is used to make bread. The other half is grown mostly in Kyushu and northern Kanto, and this is what becomes udon.

Did you know that most of Australia is a dessert, famously known as the outback, with a giant rock called Uluru Australia is also a home to the Aboriginal people who are the natives, who of which migrated to Australia thousands of years ago. Modern-day Hawaii has a rich culture built upon the lives and traditions of the indigenous Hawaiian people, as well as the many immigrants who came to the islands as plantation workers during the early colonial period. One influential culture is Japanese culture. Did you know that Aloha shirts have Japanese roots? Japanese immigrants started heading to the Pacific islands after 1868. They are believed to have made flower print shirts with material from worn-out kimonos brought from Japan. Across the islands, you can find many Japanese restaurants, stores, and businesses, which helps to make Hawaii a popular vacation spot for Japanese tourists, as well as contributing to the melting pot of cultures that make up Hawaii’s unique population. The “Aloha Spirit,” is reflective of the way many diverse groups live together on these small islands. What I find most interesting about Hawaii is ________________. Thank you, and Aloha!

Mission ③
All over the world, many people celebrate Halloween on October 31st. The holiday originated a long time ago in Europe. As it is the evening before the Christian festival `All Hallows’ Day,` it was called `All Hallows’ Eve.` Later on, this was shortened to Halloween.
Halloween is a special holiday for children as they get to wear costumes of their favorite characters. In the past, I have dressed up as _________. Some celebrate Halloween by attending costume parties or parades, others go ‘Trick or Treating.’ Trick or Treat is a fun activity that provides an opportunity for children to show off their costumes and collect as many treats as they can. They knock on doors and say “trick or treat!” in the hope that the homeowners will give them some candy or snacks.
For Halloween this year, I would like to _________!
Thank you very much!

Mission 4 << Stephen Hawking’s speech
Through theoretical physics, I have sought to answer some of the great questions.
But there are other challenges, other big questions which must be answered and these will also need a new generation who are interested, engaged and with an understanding of science.
I hope that science and technology will provide answers to these questions …
…but it will take people, human beings with knowledge and understanding to implement the solutions.
When we see the Earth from space we see ourselves as a whole, we see the unity and not the divisions.
We are here together and we need to live together with tolerance and respect.
We must become ‘Global Citizens.’ I have been enormously privileged though my work to be able to contribute to our understanding of the universe. But it would be an empty universe indeed if it were not for the people I love and who love me….
We are all time-travelers journeying together into the future. But let us work together to make that future a place we want to visit!
Mission 4 << Mother Teresa’s Seech -Nobel Lecture on 11 December 1979
We pray this prayer every day after Holy Communion because it is very fitting for each one of us and I always wonder that five hundred years ago, when Saint Francis of Assisi composed this prayer, that they had the same difficulties that we have today. And so he composed this prayer that fits very nicely with us also.
Lord, make me a channel of your peace.
That where there is hatred, I may bring love.
That where there is wrong, I may bring forgiveness.
That where there is discord, I may bring harmony.
That where there is error, I may bring truth.
That where there is doubt, I may bring faith.
That where there is sadness, I may bring joy.
To understand than to be understood.
To love than to be loved.
For it is by forgetting self that one finds.
It is by forgiving that one is forgiven.
It is by dying that one awakens to eternal life.
Amen.

Mission ③
Hello! What is the first thing you think of when someone says Christmas? Is it Santa Claus, receiving presents or eating delicious food?
Christmas is celebrated on December 25th every year. It’s an exciting time of year to spend with family and friends, eat lots of food, sing Christmas carols and watch festive movies together. Christmas movies are often about Santa Claus and the spirit of Christmas. What do you think the spirit of Christmas is? Is it the excitement we get from ripping open our colorfully wrapped presents? Is it the beautiful decorations we place on the Christmas tree and throughout the house? Is it the delightful smell of freshly cooked Christmas dinner filling our noses as we get ready to eat? All of these things make Christmas so special to us, but what makes this holiday so magical?
For me, _________________________ is what makes Christmas such a wonderful time of the year. I will be celebrating Christmas this year by ____________________________. How will you spend this winter holiday? I wish you all a Merry Christmas! Thank you for listening to my speech!
