KIS Events

Throughout the year there are many chances for students to join fun events held at our school. We explore different cultures and curriculum unique from our regular lessons; for example, kids can decorate Easter eggs, learn how to make Japanese udon from scratch or march in our own Halloween parade! There’s always something to look forward to no matter what time of year it is.

Come on down! Tell us YOUR story!

The stage was set, and the announcement was made. The final of the Speech Grand Championship for 2018 was set to begin. I sat in my judge’s chair, excited in anticipation of what was to unfold. So many contestants, coming from such a wide age range, presenting an array of topics. As a judge, how were we to separate the great from the good, and the medalists from the outstanding?
So, just what made them worthy of their gold, silver or bronze? I must admit, the task wasn’t easy, but here is what it came down to. After a discussion with the panel of judges on stage, just prior to announcing the top 3, I discovered that all judges were looking for the same thing. It was a unanimous decision. Stage presence; the ability to connect with and capture the crowd. This was shown by our medalists. All three were great story tellers. They had a certain charisma, one that kept the audience wanting more.
Speech content, the ability to memorize, the usage of high-level vocabulary, and the skill to “recite” with great word enunciation, certainly gained valuable points. However, the contestants who delivered their message with feeling, were able to connect with the judges more.
Thank you to those who entered. Hold your head up high and be proud of what you had accomplished. Congratulations.
For those looking to enter this competition next year: Come on down! Tell us YOUR story!

Mission ①

Hello, my name is ____________.

I will talk about volunteering in America.

Many people like to give their time to help others!

You can help other people, animals, or even nature!

Let’s volunteer to help each other and make the world a better place.

Thank you very much!

Mission ②

Good morning/afternoon.

My name is _____________.

Today, I will be talking about volunteering.

Volunteering is when you give your time to help others.

In America, you can volunteer to help other people, animals, the environment, or even at big community events.

Volunteering is fun because you can learn a lot while helping the community.

I would like to volunteer to/at ____________________.

Thank you very much!

Mission ③

Volunteering is an individual or group voluntarily giving their time and labor to service their community for free.

Good morning/afternoon, my name is ___________________.

How can we volunteer?

Some examples of volunteering in America are helping to walk dogs at an animal shelter, preparing and serving food to those less fortunate, picking up litter around town, and planting flowers and vegetables at a community garden.

Some choose to volunteer in their home country, while others volunteer abroad. Many non-profit organizations rely on volunteers to accomplish their day-to-day objectives and achieve their long-term goals for charity.

Why do people volunteer?

Some say the key to a life of purpose is taking the time to help others every day.

Volunteering your time to help others connects you to a cause far greater than yourself – the goal of creating a better future for everyone.

I would like to volunteer to/at _________________, because _______________________.

What would you like to do to help others?

Whether you volunteer to help out at an animal shelter, clean up your local area, or take care of the people around you, it’s a win-win situation.

This is because when your efforts go towards making society better for all of us, we all feel better.

Thank you very much!

Aloha! My name is _____________. Today, I will be talking about Hawaii. Hawaii is the 50th State of America. The capital city is called Honolulu. Did you know that surfing was invented in Hawaii? Surfers from all over the world come to Hawaii to ride the perfect waves, which can be found at the many beautiful beaches. Hawaii is a popular vacation spot for Japanese people, you can find many Japanese restaurants and stores on the islands. My favourite thing about Hawaii is ____________________. Thank you very much!

Mission ③

When someone mentions “Hawaii”, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? Surfing? Volcanoes? Hula? Pineapples? For me, when someone says “Hawaii”, I think of ______________________.
Modern-day Hawaii has a rich culture built upon the lives and traditions of the indigenous Hawaiian people, as well as the many immigrants who came to the islands as plantation workers during the early colonial period. One influential culture is Japanese culture. Did you know that Aloha shirts have Japanese roots? Japanese immigrants started heading to the Pacific islands after 1868. They are believed to have made flower print shirts with material from worn-out kimonos brought from Japan. Across the islands, you can find many Japanese restaurants, stores, and businesses, which helps to make Hawaii a popular vacation spot for Japanese tourists, as well as contributing to the melting pot of cultures that make up Hawaii’s unique population. The “Aloha Spirit,” is reflective of the way many diverse groups live together on these small islands. What I find most interesting about Hawaii is ________________. Thank you, and Aloha!

Through theoretical physics, I have sought to answer some of the great questions.

But there are other challenges, other big questions which must be answered and these will also need a new generation who are interested, engaged and with an understanding of science.

I hope that science and technology will provide answers to these questions …

…but it will take people, human beings with knowledge and understanding to implement the solutions.

When we see the Earth from space we see ourselves as a whole, we see the unity and not the divisions.

We are here together and we need to live together with tolerance and respect.

We must become ‘Global Citizens.’ I have been enormously privileged though my work to be able to contribute to our understanding of the universe. But it would be an empty universe indeed if it were not for the people I love and who love me….

We are all time-travelers journeying together into the future. But let us work together to make that future a place we want to visit!

Mission 4 << Mother Teresa’s Seech -Nobel Lecture on 11 December 1979

We pray this prayer every day after Holy Communion because it is very fitting for each one of us and I always wonder that five hundred years ago, when Saint Francis of Assisi composed this prayer, that they had the same difficulties that we have today. And so he composed this prayer that fits very nicely with us also.

Lord, make me a channel of your peace.

That where there is hatred, I may bring love.

That where there is wrong, I may bring forgiveness.

That where there is discord, I may bring harmony.

That where there is error, I may bring truth.

That where there is doubt, I may bring faith.

That where there is sadness, I may bring joy.

To understand than to be understood.

To love than to be loved.

For it is by forgetting self that one finds.

It is by forgiving that one is forgiven.

It is by dying that one awakens to eternal life.

Thank you very much!

Mission ②

Around the world, many people celebrate Christmas on December 25th. Christmas is a time when families and friends like to get together and share delicious food, give each other presents, and decorate their homes with ornaments and lights. Children wait patiently for Christmas morning, to see what present Santa Claus has brought for them. For some, going to church is the most important part of Christmas.

In my house, we celebrate Christmas by _____________. Thank you very much!

Mission ③

Every year, on December 25th, many people celebrate Christmas day together with their loved ones. What do you think the spirit of Christmas is? Is it the excitement we get from ripping open our colorfully wrapped presents? Is it the beautiful decorations we place on the Christmas tree and all throughout the house? Is it the delightful smell of freshly cooked Christmas dinner filling our noses as we get ready to eat? All of these things make Christmas so special to us, but what makes this holiday so magical?

For me, _________________________ is what makes Christmas such a wonderful time of the year. I will be celebrating Christmas this year by ____________________________. How will you spend this Winter holiday?

Mission 1

Hello, my name is ________. Christmas is a fun holiday many people enjoy. You can get presents from Santa Claus! I want to decorate a tree with ornaments and sing Christmas songs. Thank you very much!

Mission 2

December 25th is Christmas Day. Many people celebrate this day by giving presents and decorating their homes. One popular decoration is the Christmas tree. You can hang ornaments, lights, and even candy canes on it! Some people have a special dinner on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. There are many different traditions, like telling jokes or eating cookies. People often wrap their presents in colorful paper and ribbons. I want ___________ for Christmas! Thank you very much!

Mission 3

Christmas is a popular holiday around the world. People give presents, decorate their homes and sing Christmas songs or carols. For many people, it is a special holiday to spend time with their families or go to church. Other people might celebrate it just for fun! It really depends on the countries and families. A popular tradition in America is buying a Fir tree and decorating it with ornaments. They usually change the ornaments every year so that they can enjoy it together each time. Cooking roast beef and mashed potatoes is often traditional for Christmas in Europe. In my house, we usually cook ___________ and _____________ to celebrate Christmas. Do you know about Christmas trees? You could put a real Fir tree in your house for Christmas! The Christmas trees smell nice, but you need to take good care of them. A long time ago, people decorated their trees with candles. Today, that can be very dangerous, so we often use electric lights instead. You can keep presents under the tree all throughout December, until Christmas Day, when you can open them! It’s exciting to finally open the presents after waiting such a long time. I want ____________ this Christmas!

Thank you for listening to my speech!
